Local Directories
Getting listed in web directories should be your first step in your ‘link building’ strategy. You should note that directories are completely different than search engines. We highly suggest that you submit your website and individual pages and articles to as many directories as you can. You can also submit the links to your videos if they are highly competitive and need an extra boost to get to the top.
Web directories provide an easy method of obtaining links since the Webmaster of the directory wants to add links to the directory to try and make it as comprehensive as possible. Most web directories are free, but some charge a fee to be listed or request a reciprocal link. We don’t pay for listings in web directories as there are plenty of free ones available.
We definitely recommend trying to get listed in the Open Directory Project / DMOZ (www.dmoz.org) – this is the largest web directory on the web. But be warned it can take over a year just to have a moderator review your submission!
With the directories listed below, start with the ones on the top and work your way down the list. The “Page Rank” is a measurement of importance that Google places on links from different sites. The higher the page rank, the more weight it carries for SEO effect on your site. Links with no page rank also do count. However, you would obviously want to start with the high PR and go down the list to the lower PR sites.
The directories on this list may change. Some directories go out of business and others appear. We update this list on a regular basis when we find directories that are not working any longer.
The process of submitting to directories is a very tedious one – it can be difficult to find an up-to-date list of directories, and also it takes time to type your details over and over again.
If you would like to outsource this process to us, we can create profiles on all the below listed directories for a one-time fee of $300.
Our process includes checking the directory to see whether the business is already listed. If it is, we will claim it and optimize it. If not, we will manually create a listing in the directory, wait for confirmation message, confirm and optimize the listing. Optimization includes adding as much information as each particular directory will allow, such as photos, videos, descriptions, hours of operation, payment methods and etc.
