I am always fascinated by great marketing examples, and “Angry Birds” has got to be one of the best recent examples.
With the multitude of free games and silly apps released all the time, who would have thought that a bunch of wingless birds and pigs without legs would dominate the market? On a recent trip to Moscow, Russia, we saw the same thing in as in the US – kids and adults alike spending their time playing the game while going to work, school or just relaxing.
Now, Angry Birds creators, Rovio Entertainment have taken what I think is the most brilliant step – they are teeming up with Lucasfilm Ltd to create a new blockbuster entertainment franchise collaboration called “Angry Birds Star Wars.”
The project will launch November 8th.
The unique partnership will combine all the fun of the classic Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space with the characters, stories and settings of the epic space fantasy, Star Wars.
“This is the best Angry Birds game we’ve ever done. It’s the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay set in in a galaxy far, far away,” says Peter Vesterbacka, CMO of Rovio. “As a big Star Wars fan myself, I’m really excited about this new universe. The Force is definitely strong with this one.”
Capitalizing on the popularity of the franchise, a massive retail launch for Angry Birds Star Wars is planned for later this fall.
